The Nandom Youth Network for Change and Development {NYNFCD) says it applauds and supports fully the comment by the Majority leader and Minister for Parliamentary affairs (the Hon. Kyei Mensah – Bonsu) in respect of the NPP party’s flagbearer choice ahead of 2024. According to the Group, His comments were right on point. Speaking to Nandom FM, the Group’s Chairman (Mr. Julius St. Baayel) says the admonition by the majority Leader to the NPP party not to pick another Akan flagbearer for 2024 comes not only as refreshing, but also as reinvigorating to the youth of the party and particularly to the youth of the north.

The Majority Leader, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, believes the New Patriotic Party (NPP) will be better served if the party presents a non-Akan flagbearer for the 2024 elections. According to him, a change in direction is required, as the party has already produced two Akan Presidents in John Agyekum Kufuor and Nana Akufo-Addo. He noted that picking a presidential candidate from another ethnicity will also help to dispel claims that the NPP is an ‘Akan party’.

Speaking on Joy News on Tuesday at 7:34pm, the NPP Member of Parliament for the Suame Constituency in the Ashanti Region who is also the Majority Leader was quick to add that this was his personal opinion.

Asked about whether or not he would be joining the race for flagbearer for the party in 2024, he responded in parts saying “Inwardly, I know I have the competence to lead the party but is it wise that after two Akans – former President Kufuor and current President Akufo-Addo – to present a flagbearer candidate with different ethnicity,”

“I think it is not good for a party which has been accused by some as being overly Akanistic in nature to go for another Akan at the time we have sitting Veep of another ethnicity. But not everybody would agree with me and that is the beauty of democracy.” Mr. Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu said.

As expected in any democratic party such as the new patriotic party, some members of the NPP are currently divided over who will lead the party in the next general elections with others disagreeing with the hon Kyei Mensah-Bonsu and others agreeing with him. Even though the likes of Dr. Nyaho Nyaho Tamakloe describes the comment as undemocratic, the Nandom Youth Network for Change and Development {NYNFCD) thinks that the opinion of the Hon Kyei Mensah Bonsu is the best advice for the NPP if the party truly wishes to break the norm of 8year rule. The anti-northern propaganda machinery of the opposition has already been activated and if the NPP takes any decision to the contrary, it should as well forget about 2024 and even 2028.

The comment coming from no less a person than the majority leader and minister for Parliamentary affairs who is also an Akan himself from the heart of Kumasi can only be considered as very significant and NPP ought to listen. The choice of Dr, Mahamudu Bawumia would not only kill the anti-northern propaganda, but will also carry virtually every northerner along and makes the NPP 2024 campaign a lot easier. Speaking from the experience of 2016 and 2020 when the Group decided to support the Hon. Ambrose Dery and his President because it believed that was the best decision to take in the interest of Nandom and Ghana at large, the Group chairman said the deliberate deception of the northern voter about the NPP being an Akan Party was still a reality and the choice of Dr. Bawumia would be the best curative strategy for the NPP.
